En Arte y agencia, Alfred Gell formula una teoría antropológica de las artes visuales que se centra en el contexto social de la producción, circulación y recepción del arte. Como teoría del nexo de las relaciones sociales que involucran obras de arte, este trabajo sugiere que en ciertos contextos, los objetos de arte sustituyen a las personas y, por lo tanto, median la agencia social.
