By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextSeries: Eva Holtby lecture on contemporary culture ; no. 3Publication details: Toronto : Royal Ontario Museum, 2009.Description: 66 p : il. (algunos col.) ; 19 cmISBN:
  • 9780888544698
Subject(s): Summary: ""Oil and Sugar: Contemporary Art and Islamic Culture", the title of this talk, is taken in part from a recent work by Kader Attia, a thirty-eight-year-old French artist of Algerian descent. The conjunction of oil and sugar -unlikely, even incongruous, materials- in the work of an artist born in one country but whose roots lie in a different one, and whose past and present are intertwined with colonial and post-colonial histories, seems to me a perfect metaphor for any discussion of contemporary art and Islamic culture. This subject has preoccupied my thinking for the last decade, if not more, and brings together two of my principal concerns: an abiding interest in the long and rich traditions of Islamic art, and a deep commitment to contemporary art and artists."
