The conjunction of oil and sugar -unlikely, even incongruous, materials- in the work of an artist born in one country but whose roots lie in a different one, and whose past and present are intertwined with colonial and post-colonial histories, seems to me a perfect metaphor for any discussion of contemporary art and Islamic culture. This subject has preoccupied my thinking for the last decade, if not more, and brings together two of my principal concerns: an abiding interest in the long and rich traditions of Islamic art, and a deep commitment to contemporary art and artists."
